Vol. 399 No. 4

Written Answers. - Independent Radio and Television Commission Expenses.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

26 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Communications the total amounts paid by him to the Independent Radio and Television Commission under the terms of section 20 of the Radio and Television Act, 1988, since the establishment of the commission; the way in which it is intended to finance the commission in the future; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A total of £500,000 was paid to the Independent Radio and Television Commission in respect of its initial expenses in accordance with section 20 of the Radio and Television Act, 1988.

The Act provides that the commission must conduct their affairs so as to ensure that their revenue is at least sufficient to meet their expenses. The commission's future revenue will be raised by placing a 3 per cent levy on the advertising revenue of the independent broadcasting services.
