Vol. 399 No. 11

Written Answers. - Industrial Action.

Patrick McCartan

Ceist:

46 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Finance the steps he intends to take to resolve the industrial dispute at the Nassau Street Offices of the Revenue Commissioners, Dublin 2, in order that people can obtain their tax free allowances, in particular those applying for their first tax free allowance; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The staff in certain grades working in the office of the inspector of taxes, PAYE Districts 5 and 9, Nassau Street, were engaged in industrial action from 12 March 1990 to 23 April 1990. This action involved a refusal to deal with taxpayers at the public counter or on the telephone. Correspondence from taxpayers was dealt with as normal. Unfortunately, during the course of this action delays and inconvenience were experienced by taxpayers in their dealings with that office.

Following negotiations between management and the unions the industrial action was ended and normal working was resumed in the area on 24 April 1990. The residual backlog of work arising from the industrial action has since been cleared and work is now being dealt with on a current basis.
