Vol. 399 No. 12

Written Answers. - Aliens' Amendment Order.

Donal Carey

Ceist:

60 Mr. Carey and Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Justice if he is satisfied with the operation of Article 5 (4) of the Aliens' Amendment Order, 1975, in so far as applicants for asylum and refugee status may be imprisoned indefinitely at the pleasure of the Minister for Justice; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The article cited by the Deputies does not contain the provision stated in the question. What it provides for is the detention, pending arrangements being made for their departure, of aliens refused leave to land, by an immigration officer.

I am satisfied that the provisions of the article are necessary and I have no proposals for any amendment.
