Ceist:66 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Marine if he intends to implement the proposals of the salmon review committee regarding the use of monofilament nets for salmon drift net fishing.

The salmon review group in considering the question of monofilament nets recommended that the ban should remain until such time as there is an agreed management programme, including control of illegal fishing for salmon, which operates effectively. Following the publication of the report submissions were invited from interested parties but there was no consensus on such a programme.
I have therefore no plans at this stage to legalise monofilament netting in salmon fishing.
