Vol. 403 No. 1

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Defence Forces Representative Bodies.

Dick Spring

Ceist:

15 Mr. Spring asked the Taoiseach when, in his capacity as Minister for Defence, he proposes to meet representaitves of the Defence Forces Representative Bodies; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Meetings between officials of my Department and elected representatives of officers and enlisted personnel are taking place on a regular basis with a view to the formal establishment of representative associations. The question of my meeting the elected representatives does not arise at present.

May I ask the Taoiseach, in his capacity as Minister for Defence, if a request has been received for a meeting with him? Is he aware that on the last occasion the previous Minister for Defence answered questions he made promises, as would be his style? Is the Taoiseach going to honour those promises, 23 in total, made by the previous Minister for Defence at Question Time?

No request has been received. I am in touch with the situation and there are very detailed, protracted negotiations going on. Whereas some people might complain about the delay, I think it is better that the whole matter be fully dealt with at this stage so that proper representational organisations can be set up for the future.

Given the Taoiseach's other duties and responsibilities, does he feel that he has adequate time to give to this matter?

Temporarily.
