Vol. 403 No. 1

Written Answers. - Game Shooting Licences.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

102 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Finance the criteria and conditions necessary for the granting of licences to take part in game shooting in Ireland; and if he has satisfied himself that such conditions are realistic in view of the European regulations in this area.

In accordance with the Wildlife Act, 1976 (section 28) a person wishing to obtain a hunting licence to hunt game birds must be at least 16 years of age and is: (a) entitled to sporting rights over the land, or (b) the guest, servant or agent of, or have the written authority of the person entitled to sporting rights over the land; (c) a member of a group entitled to sporting rights over the land, or (d) someone whom the Minister has declared qualified.

All licences are granted subject to conservation requirements of the protected species concerned. I am satisfied that such conditions are realistic in view of the European regulations at present.
