Vol. 403 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dún Laoghaire (Dublin) Pier.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

104 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Marine the reason the extension to the walkway on the East Pier, Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin, is being removed; by whom the removal was requested; and if he will outline the recommendations of the Interim Harbour Board on the matter.

The extension at the root of the East Pier, originally provided as a temporary measure to facilitate car ferry operations, has been redundant for many years. In January of this year under my direction my Department, in their new role with responsibility for management of the harbour, considered improvements that should be made in the immediate term. They recommended that the extension walkway be removed. The proposal was endorsed by the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Board. I understand that inter alia An Taisce and Dún Laoghaire Combined Residents Association are of the view that its removal would enhance the essential character of the harbour. The work will be completed as soon as possible.
