Vol. 403 No. 4

Written Answers. - Registration of Nursing Institutions.

John Ellis

Ceist:

220 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Health if he has any plans to pursue a single registration in respect of all nursing institutions of the EC; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A sectoral directive affording mutual recognition of general nurse qualifications awarded in member states to nationals of all member states was passed in 1977 and implemented in Ireland by the European Communities (Recognition of General Nursing Qualifications) Regulations, 1980. This Directive upholds the right of persons holding qualifications in general nursing to establish themselves and to provide service anywhere in the Community.

A similar Directive in respect of qualified midwives was adopted in 1980 and implemented in Ireland by the European Communities (Recognition of Midwifery Nursing Qualifications) Regulations, 1983.

Proposals for similar sectoral Directives in respect of qualified sick childrens nurses and psychiatric nurses are currently being considered by the EC Commission.
