Ceist:

128 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the number of gardaí assigned to the Bridewell station, Dublin 7; the number of those assigned to foot patrol duties; if this station is at full strength at present; and if there are plans to provide more gardaí to this area.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 127 and 128 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that provisional figures indicate that 220 burglaries at dwellings, — including houses, flats, etc., were recorded in the Bridewell Garda area in 1990 and that there were 81 detections of such offences.

At present a total of 143 gardai are assigned to the Bridewell station. The number assigned to foot patrol varies from time to time according to other demands, but three to four gardai are usually assigned to foot patrol duty in the area at any one time.

The number of gardai assigned to individual stations is not fixed and the Garda authorities adjust station strength on an on-going basis having regard to available resources, local circumstances and other demands on Garda services. The Garda authorities inform me that the current overall strength assigned to the Bridewell station is the maximum that can be provided there at present but that the situation is being kept under continuing review.
