Vol. 409 No. 3

Written Answers. - Imprisonment of Egyptian Citizens.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

53 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the concern which many Irish people have for the continued imprisonment in Egypt of three Egyptian citizens (details supplied) who are in jail because of their conversion to Christianity; if he has received representations from the Irish based organisation, The Church in Chains; if he is prepared to raise with the Egyptian Ambassador the position of these people and convey to the ambassador the concern felt by many people having regard to Egypt's and Ireland's membership of the United Nations and consequential obligations which flow from that membership; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the case of the three Egyptians who are in jail in Egypt following their conversion to Christianity and I have asked the Irish Ambassador in Cairo to look into the matter. I shall write to the Deputy when the ambassador's report is received.

I have not received representations in the matter from the organisation The Church in Chains.
