Vol. 409 No. 6

Written Answers. - Occupiers' Liability.

Seán Barrett

Ceist:

115 Mr. S. Barrett asked the Minister for Justice if he has any proposals to introduce legislation to relieve owner/occupiers of land from liability arising from accidents to sports persons using the land on their own initiative; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

117 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Justice the plans he has to introduce legislation regarding the law relating to occupier liability; if his attention has been drawn to (a) the concern which has been expressed by the National Association of Regional Game Councils and the IFA and (b) the fact that landowners are concerned that they could be held responsible for any injury to sports persons; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 115 and 117 together.

I am aware of concerns expressed on behalf of farmers and sports persons in regard to occupiers' liability. However, as I have explained in the House on previous occasions, I could not undertake to indicate by way of reply to parliamentary questions what specific proposals I might have in regard to amending legislation in a particular area. When there is a Government decision in the matter it will be announced in the usual way.
