Vol. 409 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Age Statistics.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

116 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice if he will give details of the age profile of serving members of the Garda Síochána; the number of gardaí who have 30 years or more service; the number of gardaí who are availing of the age extension; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The age profile of members of the Garda Síochána as at 31 May 1991 is given in the following table; 1,291 members serving on that date had 30 or more years service.

To date, 177 members of garda, sergeant and inspector ranks have availed of the temporary extension of retirement age from 57 to 60 years of age. As I have already announced, the extension is being continued until 31 December 1992 and will be available to a further 203 members who would otherwise have been due to retire in 1991-92 on reaching age 57.
