As the Deputy knows, there are three post-primary schools in Carrickmacross with a total enrolment of 1,404 pupils.
Following an examination of the overall post-primary accommodation situation in the centre, my Department decided that to proceed with three separate building projects would be contrary to their policy of rationalisation and would not be in the best long term interest of the pupils in the area. In accordance with standard practice, discussions were initiated with the school management on the issue of rationalisation.
The need for rationalisation has been accepted by all three post-primary schools in the centre and discussions and consultations among all the interested parties have been conducted at local level. I would urge that further discussions take place at local level with a view to reaching a consensus on the future provision to be made for post-primary facilities in Carrickmacross.
In the meantime, my Department has agreed to grand-aid temporary accommodation at Inver College to meet its short term requirements.
