Vol. 415 No. 1

Written Answers. - Asthma Society Funding.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

375 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if she proposes to allocate funds to the Asthma Society of Ireland, 24 Anglesea Street, Dublin 2, in order that they can launch a major new initiative aimed at getting the critically important education messages about asthma across to the estimated 250,000 Irish asthmatics and their families.

The Asthma Society of Ireland has prepared a three year development plan which incorporates an integrated series of programmes on various aspects of asthma, including information, awareness, self-help and research. The plan is expected to be launched in May of this year. Given the importance of this initiative the health promotion unit of my Department as part of its support programme for voluntary organisations with a health promotion remit invested £5,000 in the plan in December 1991. This support was in respect of the development of information materials which are an important feature of the plan. Similar support was also provided to the society in previous years.
