Vol. 415 No. 9

Written Answers. - Religious Education.

Toddy O'Sullivan

Ceist:

107 Mr. T. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education if, in the context of the Green Paper on Education, he will outline his plans to review the religious education methods both at primary and secondary school levels; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The content and teaching methodology of religious education has traditionally been a matter for the managerial authorities of the individual schools in accordance with the ethos of the school.

Any arrangements made by authorities in this respect is subject to the constitutional requirements regarding the right of any child to attend a school receiving public money without attending religious instruction at that school. This latter point will be addressed in the forthcoming Green Paper on Education.
