Vol. 415 No. 9

Written Answers. - Dublin Secondary Schools.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

117 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the plans, if any, he has to develop all-Irish secondary schools in Dublin so as to meet the needs of those pupils currently attending a proliferation of all-Irish primary schools.

There is at present provision for post-primary education through Irish in the following second level schools in Dublin.

Coláiste Mhuire, Parnell Square (Boys).

Scoil Chaitríona, Glasnevin (CoEd.).

Coláiste Eoin, Stillorgan (Boys).

Coláiste Iosagáin, Stillorgan (Girls).

Coláiste Chillian, Clondalkin (CoEd. — under County Dublin vocational education committee).

An application by County Dublin vocational education committee for the development of all-Irish post-primary schools in Tallaght and Lucan is currently under consideration in my Department.

My Department is committed to the continued strengthening and development of the Irish language in the education system. In line with this policy, each application for the development of an all-Irish post-primary school is considered in detail and assessed on its own merits. The level of support for such a development, its long term viability, and the availability of pupil places in existing all-Irish schools within a reasonable distance are taken into account in the course of examination. It is in this context that a decision will be made regarding the need for any further all-Irish post-primary provision in the Dublin area.
