Vol. 416 No. 8

Written Answers. - Tourism Employment Estimates.

Seamus Kirk

Ceist:

106 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if she will give details of the estimated numbers employed in the tourist industry in Ireland in each of the years, (1) 1950, (2) 1960, (3) 1970, (4) 1980, (5) 1990 and (6) 1991.

Bord Fáilte did not begin preparing tourism employment estimates until the mid 1980s using data estimates by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) and therefore do not have comparable estimates prior to that period.

The board's estimate for fulltime jobs supported by tourism in Ireland in 1990 was 82,000. Estimates for 1991 will not be available until mid-year.
