Vol. 424 No. 6

Written Answers. - Orthopaedic Operation Delay.

Gerry O'Sullivan

Ceist:

91 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Health the reason a person (details supplied) in Cork city who is in severe pain and discomfort has to wait 18 months for a hip operation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The admission of a patient to hospital is a clinical decision for the consultant in charge of the case. Waiting lists are kept under review and priority is given to urgent cases.

I have had enquiries made of the Southern Health Board about this case and I undersand that the patient will be called for surgery in approximately three to six months time. If the patient's condition is causing concern, he should contact his general practitioner who would be in the best position to stress the urgency of the case to the consultant concerned.
