Vol. 426 No. 5

Written Answers. - Legal Metrology Service.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

109 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the position in relation to the proposed transfer of weights and measures Garda functions to Eolas; the cost of these proposals; and the likely date of implementation.

A major programme to modernise and restructure the legal metrology service is being implemented over the period 1992-94.

Under this programme — new equipment and eight regional centres are being provided at an estimated cost of £3.5 million and a unified inspection and enforcement service is being established under the aegis of Eolas.

Officers at present discharging the inspection and enforcement function, attached to my Department, Garda Síochána, Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Corporations will be offered the opportunity of transferring voluntarily to Eolas.

The new service will operate on commercial lines.
