Vol. 426 No. 5

Written Answers. - Prohibition of Parked Trucks in Residential Areas.

Mary Harney

Ceist:

131 Miss Harney asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the nuisance and danger caused to residents he will give details of the stage of his plans for the prohibition of parked trucks in residential areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Traffic and parking controls are applied generally through the application of by-laws or temporary rules made by the Garda Commissioner with my consent under sections 89 and 90 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, or through general traffic regulations made by me under section 60 of the Road Traffic Act, 1968. The question of applying restrictions on the parking of large vehicles in urban areas is being considered by the Garda Síochána in the context of temporary rules which would apply initially in the Dublin area. This approach follows from discussions between my Department, the Garda Síochána and Dublin Corporation. The making of such temporary rules is a matter for the Garda Commissioner in the first instance.
