Vol. 426 No. 5

Written Answers. - Effluent Discharges Control.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

153 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment the legislation which implements Directive 86/280/EEC; and if he has satisfied himself that this directive is being properly implemented.

Wexford): The provisions of the Local Government (Water Pollution) Acts, 1977 and 1990 provide general powers for the control by local authorities of effluent discharges containing dangerous substances of the types covered by this Directive. Under these Acts, local authorities can implement measures which may be necessary to avoid or eliminate pollution from any significant multiple or diffuse sources of these substances.

Investigations carried out by my Department indicate that discharges from the production and handling of these substances in industries to which the Directive relates do not at present arise in Ireland.
