Vol. 426 No. 5

Request for Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business proper I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy Richard Bruton. I now call Deputy Bruton to state the matter on which he has given notice.

I request the suspension of Standing Orders under Standing Order 30, to debate the following urgent matter; The imminent threat to 2,500 direct and indirect jobs dependent on Digital Equipment International Ltd., in Galway and the failure of Government Ministers either to detect the turning political tide which has brought these jobs to the brink, or to take effective action to protect these jobs. This is the primary business of the Dáil today and should be allocated priority in the ordering of our business.

The matter is being dealt with today by way of a substantive motion which is before the House. Accordingly, it is not likely to develop significantly before the Dáil will have, in practice, an opportunity to discuss it. The House will deal with this matter at 6 p.m. and the substantive motion in question is in the Deputy's name.

A Cheann Comhairle, I submitted a Private Notice Question to your office regarding the difficulties being experienced at Digital, which you disallowed.

If it was on the same subject matter it anticipated the debate that would ensue at 6 p.m. this evening.
