Vol. 428 No. 2

Written Answers. - Medical Cards.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

119 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health if his Department has calculated the cost of providing medical cards to all children with a significant disability regardless of the means of the parents; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department does not have data on the number of additional medical cards which would be issued if children with significant disabilities were provided with medical cards regardless of the means of the parents. I am satisfied, however, that the Chief Executive Officers of the health boards, who are responsible for determining eligibility for medical cards, take careful account of the circumstances of such cases in order to ensure that every person who is in genuine need of a medical card receives one.
