Vol. 428 No. 5
128 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give details, on a percentage basis, of the main reasons for driving test candidates failing the test.
The reason candidates fail driving tests are many and may include various combinations of faults or repeats of faults. For this reason, it would not be realistic to attempt to provide detailed figures. However, the main points of failure are inadequate observation, incorrect position on the road, and inadequate use, or lack of use, of mirrors and signals.
129 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for the Environment the percentage of candidates who passed the driving test in 1992 and were taking the test for the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth or more times; and the number of candidates who took the test in each of the above groups.
Fifty-two point four per cent of applicants who took the driving test in 1992 were successful. The pass rates for first time and repeat tests were 49.7 per cent and 56.5 per cent respectively. A breakdown of repeat tests is not available.
130 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for the Environment the percentage of driving test candidates who failed the driving test at each driving test centre in the country in 1992.
