Vol. 428 No. 5

Written Answers. - Health Board Allocation.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

217 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health the total amount of money provided to a health board (details supplied) in 1992 following its letter of allocation of £72.5 million; the headings that the increased moneys were allocated for; the works carried out under these allocations; the total amount of money allocated to this board during 1992; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The North-Eastern Health Board's original non-capital allocation for 1992 was £72.472m. A further allocation of £4.840m was made available during the year making a total revised allocation of £77.312m.

The increase in allocation to the Board arose from expenditure incurred by the Board for which provision had not been made in its original allocation. Such expenditure arose from the implementation of general and special pay increases approved for certain categories of staff during the year, the provision of additional mental handicap and child care services as well as services for the physically disabled, as provided for in the 1992 budget. In addition arising from the Supplementary Estimate passed by the Dáil on 5 November 1992 additional funding was provided to the Board to meet the increased cost of the General Medical Services Scheme, the increased cost of community drug schemes and the Disabled Persons Maintenance Allowance, the increase in the cost of medical indemnity for medical staff employed by the Board and other miscellaneous costs such as HIB vaccines.

In accordance with normal procedures the allocation takes account of £8.765m income generated by the board annually, in the main, patient income and superannuation contributions.
