Vol. 428 No. 5

Written Answers. - Promised Legislation.

Ceist:

90 Mr. G. Mitchell and Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice when she will introduce legislation as promised in the Programme for Partnership Government 1993 to 1997 to place the Land Registry and Registry of Deeds on a commercial footing, to update occupiers liability law, to amend business tenancies, to improve the legal arrangements for elderly people and to give effect to international conventions on drug trafficking, torture, recovery abroad of maintenance, money laundering and mutual assistance in criminal matters; and if she will give details of the scope, purposes and Exchequer cost, if any, of the legislation in each case.

Work on legislation concerning the conversion of the Land Registry and Registry of Deeds into a commercial semi-State body, to amend the law on business tenancies and to give effect to international conventions on drug trafficking, torture, money laundering and mutual assistance in criminal matters is proceeding in my Department and my proposals will be announced in the normal manner in due course.

The reform of the law on occupier's liability, recovery abroad of maintenance and the introduction of improved legal arrangements for the management of the affairs of elderly people are matters for the Minister for Equality and Law Reform.
