Vol. 431 No. 6

Written Answers. - National School Teachers' Early Retirement.

Ceist:

147 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Education if, in view of her reply to Parliamentary Question No. 156 on 5 May 1993, she will give the results, if any, there have been from the deliberations of the Teachers' Conciliation Council on the issue of national school teachers who qualified at age 19 but have to serve 36 years to qualify for the same retirement package as their colleagues who need only serve 35 years; if no result has issued from this forum, when she expects a result to issue; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I have not received a report to date from the Conciliation Council for Teachers on the general matter of early retirement. The Deputy will appreciate that early retirement is a complex matter which requires very detailed and careful consideration. I could not, therefore, predetermine the time span for the conclusion of deliberations on the matter.
