Vol. 433 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools Assistance Scheme.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

127 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education if schools (details supplied) in County Tipperary will be included in the scheme of assistance to schools in designated areas of disadvantage; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that the schools in question have applied for inclusion in the disadvantaged areas scheme.

As I have recently announced to the House, I am allocating additional exquota teaching posts to the disadvantaged areas scheme with effect from September, 1993. As part of this arrangement, a total of 50 schools will be newly included in the scheme.

All national schools have been circularised and invited to apply for inclusion in this allocation. Schools are selected for inclusion in the scheme on the basis of priority of need as determined by reference to a range of socio-economic criteria.
All applicants for inclusion in the scheme are currently being assessed on that basis.
I would expect to be in a position to announce the outcome of this process shortly.
