Vol. 436 No. 7

Written Answers. - Staffing of Dublin Schools.

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

210 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education the steps, if any, that will be taken to address the difficulties of schools (details supplied) in areas of disadvantage in Dublin 15; if she will allow for the retention of teachers who are due to be placed on the panel; if she will provide additional remedial teachers; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The staffing of a national school in any year is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year. Where the enrolment in a school falls below that required for the retention of a post, the most junior assistant is given the option of having his or her name placed on the appropriate panel for redeployment.

I have no plans to change the method of determining the staffing quota for national schools. However, my Department will be reviewing the staffing position for the 1994-95 academic year in the near future.

I would point out that all the schools mentioned by the Deputy currently have the services of a full time remedial teacher as well as concessionary teachers under the disadvantaged areas scheme.

The question of further remedial appointments is being kept under review as part of the Government's commitment to the appointment of a substantial number of additional remedial teachers in the coming years. The needs of the schools mentioned by the Deputy will be fully considered in this context.
