Vol. 438 No. 8

Written Answers. - Access to Barristers.

John Bruton

Ceist:

73 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice the action, if any, she intends to take in relation to the recommendation of the Fair Trade Commission to allow lay access to barristers.

The position is that this is one of a number of recommendations made by the former Fair Trade Commission about the barristers profession which are being examined and any decisions reached will be announced in the normal way in due course.

I should add in this regard that my colleague the Minister for Enterprise and Employment has proposals to strengthen the enforcement of competition to deal with anti-competitive arrangements in all areas of economic activity including the professions.
