Vol. 440 No. 3

Written Answers. - Protection of Fishermen's Interests.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

124 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for the Marine the undertakings, if any, that have been given to Norway by EU negotiators concerning the Irish box in sea fisheries; and the Irish negotiating stance on this matter.

Negotiations in connection with the Norwegian application for membership of the European Union are ongoing. The next phase of the negotiations will take place in Brussels on 15 March 1994.

No undertakings have been given concerning the Irish box in connection with the Norwegian negotiations.

A special concern of the Irish Delegation has been to ensure that the outcome of the negotiations will not prejudice future discussions on the review of the Iberian Accession Arrangements, including the future of Irish box.

The Irish stance on the Irish box remains unchanged from that which outlined to this House in a reply to a Parliamentary Question on 1 February 1994.
