Vol. 441 No. 7

Written Answers. - Tax Relief on Mortgage Interest Payments.

Liz O'Donnell

Ceist:

16 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Finance the number of householders/flatholders and individuals currently availing of tax relief in respect of mortgage interest relief at the 48 per cent rate; and the number of householders/flatholders and individuals who claim such relief.

It is estimated that some 320,000 taxpayers will claim tax relief on mortgage interest payments in respect of the income tax year 1994-1995.

Assuming the enactment of the changes proposed in this year's Finance Bill, it is estimated that some 165,000 taxpayers claiming relief on mortgage interest payments in respect of the income tax year 1994-1995 will be liable to tax at the 48 per cent rate.
