69 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment the total number of applicants who are awaiting driving tests; the average waiting period to be called for a test; the cost of a test; the annual cost to provide the service; and the annual income from the service.

There are currently 21,400 applicants on the waiting list for the driving test. This represents an average waiting period, nationally, of approximately six weeks.

A total of 9,640 of these applicants have been given appointments for tests in the next four/five weeks. A further 7,658 applicants have either cancelled a previous appointment or have indicated that they do not wish to be given an early appointment.

The cost of the driver testing service in 1993 is estimated at £2,910,000 while income from driver testing fees in that year was £2,940,000. The fees are as follows:
