Vol. 442 No. 3

Written Answers. - Environmental Education.

Robert Molloy

Ceist:

196 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the call by Greenpeace that resources be allocated towards a comprehensive education programme for industries and local authorities at school and college level regarding the value to Ireland of implementing clean production processes, clean technologies and pollution prevention rather than pollution control; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The principles and objectives of environmental education are integral elements of curricular provision in the education system. Subjects such as environmental and social studies, geography, science, home economics and history actively promote the development in children of positive and pro-active attitudes and actions regarding environmental issues. Environmental education will also be a part of my Department's ongoing provision for in-career development of teachers. Broader environmental issues affecting industry and local authorities specifically are not a matter for my Department.
