Vol. 442 No. 3

Written Answers. - Flood Damage.

Pat Cox

Ceist:

25 Mr. Cox asked the Minister for the Environment the action, if any, he proposes to take to assist persons who have had their homes damaged by severe flooding; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There are no funds available to me to provide assistance to householders for any damage to houses caused by flooding. Householders would normally be expected to have buildings and their contents insured against losses of this nature. However, in necessitous cases, it is open to the health boards to provide assistance to elderly householders through the Task Force on Special Housing Aid for the Elderly to remedy damage to the householder's living conditions. A health board may also assist a person, under the supplementary welfare allowances scheme, where an urgent need arises, and local authorities may help through the provision of temporary accommodation, where necessary.
