Vol. 444 No. 1

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointment.

Andrew Boylan

Ceist:

155 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Education the reason she has overlooked the appointment of a remedial teacher to Kildallan national school, Ardloughen, Belturbet, County Cavan, in view of the urgency of such an appointment; and if she will now sanction a remedial teacher.

I recently announced the appointment of 100 additional remedial posts for primary schools, which will bring the total in place to 1,133.

The posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need, following the collection and analysis of data from schools by my Department's Primary Inspectorate. The remedial needs of the school in question were considered in the context of the allocation. However, the needs of the school were not considered to be of such priority as to warrant inclusion in this allocation.

I will be keeping the question of further need in this area under review as part of a broader commitment to appoint a substantial number of additional teachers in the coming years.

The needs of all schools, including Kildallan national school, will be considered in this context.
