Vol. 444 No. 6

Written Answers. - Microwave Emissions.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

184 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the IRPA guidelines issued in 1988 knew of possible effects of modulated microwave fields on the central nervous system and the possible existence of power and frequency windows for such effects far below the guidelines set; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ceist:

185 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that microwave auditory perception occurs below the IRPA guidelines and that many members of the public are suffering from this effect in Ireland today; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ceist:

190 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that domestic microwaves should be monitored every three years and that this is the law in many countries; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 184, 185 and 190 together.

The technical specifications in the area of microwave emissions are laid down by the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications. They require compliance with the safety guidelines laid down by the International Radiation Protection Association.

The limits established by the IRPA are limits within which it is safe to work and live on the basis of all expert knowledge.
