Vol. 444 No. 6

Written Answers. - VDUs Usage by Pregnant Women.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

189 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that, in many countries, pregnant women are not allowed to work with VDUs; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As Minister for Health I am certainly concerned to ensure that matters adversely affecting public health are dealt with. However, I do not have any evidence to indicate that the use of VDUs by pregnant women is a cause for concern.

The safe operation of VDUs in the workplace is the responsibility of the Minister for Enterprise and Employment and the Health and Safety Authority which reports to him.

Legislation is being prepared by the Minister for Equality and Law Reform to implement a European directive on the employment of pregnant workers.
