Vol. 445 No. 8

Written Answers. - Boxing Clubs Funding.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

138 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Education if she has satisfied herself with the level of funding made available to boxing clubs throughout the country relative to other sports; the proposals, if any, she has to increase funding for boxing clubs; the proposals, if any, she has to fund County Boards in their efforts to assist local club development; and the reason a previous financial assistance to boxing clubs by way of equipment had to be bought through a single source nationwide. [1240/94]

I am satisfied that the level of funding made available to boxing clubs throughout the country under schemes operated by my Department is satisfactory. While there are no specific proposals to increase funding for boxing clubs outside these schemes, I would point out that the annual grant paid to the Irish Amateur Boxing Association has been increased this year and in 1993.

Under my Department's capital programmes a grant of £100,000 was provided in 1990 to the Irish Amateur Boxing Association for refurbishment works at the National Boxing Stadium and a grant allocation of £150,000 is currently being provided for further development works at the stadium. A grant of £30,000 was allocated to Glen Boxing Club, Cork in 1989 for renovations to their clubhouse. A list of recent grant allocations made to boxing clubs under my Department's recreational scheme is being circulated in the official report.

In addition to the above scheme, boxing clubs are eligible for funding at local level under the annual youth and sport scheme operated by the vocational education committees.

Under the annual scheme of grants for national sporting organisations a grant is paid annually to the Irish Amateur Boxing Association which is the recognised national governing body for the sport of boxing. This annual grant is to cover expenditure in the areas of administration, coaching, the purchase of special equipment, support for outstanding sportspersons, attendance at technical or executive meetings of the international federations and international competitions. In common with all other sports, funds are channelled through the national governing body, the IABA, which has responsibility for the development of the sport at club, county, regional and national levels.
In 1992 a once off special grant scheme was introduced to assist boxing clubs nationwide in the purchase of equipment. I am satisfied that this scheme improved the standard of training facilities available to boxers at club level. The scheme was operated by the Irish Amateur Boxing Association who sought tenders by way of public notice in the press. Following analysis of the tenders received by officials from the Department and the IABA it was decided to award a contract to a single supplier.
