Vol. 445 No. 8

Written Answers. - Third Level Places.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

140 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education the number of students who failed to secure places in third level institutions because of a shortage of places; the steps, if any, she will take to address the shortfall in places at third level; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1252/94]

Some 81 per cent of students who applied for a third level place through the CAO/CAS in 1993 obtained an offer of a place, although not all of these offers were accepted. In addition, post-leaving certificate courses provided places for 25 per cent of the students sitting the 1993 leaving certificate. The percentage to students proceeding from the leaving certificate to further education in Ireland is above the OECD average.

The Government has provided £100 million of capital expenditure for the third level sector over the past four years and is providing a further £120 million over the coming years.
