Vol. 445 No. 8

Written Answers. - Eligibility for Higher Education Grants.

Máirín Quill

Ceist:

46 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Education, in view of the fact that there are not enough places available in universities and regional technical colleges, the reason students who are attending the many private third level institutions are excluded from the grants scheme. [1064/94]

The payment of higher education grants to students in commercial private third level colleges cannot be divorced from the general policy issues relating to recognition and registration of such institutions in the public interest. This would involve the development of a comprehensive code of quality control for the private colleges sector and clarification of the basis on which student access to these colleges is arranged. This policy area will be addressed in the forthcoming White Paper.
