Vol. 445 No. 8

Written Answers. - School Computer Facilities.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

82 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education the type and level of financial or other support that is available from her Department for the setting up or equipping of a computer room in primary schools. [1149/94]

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

160 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education the type and level of support, financial or otherwise, available from her Department for the setting up or equipping of a computer room in primary schools. [1300/94]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 82 and 160 together.

Where suitable spare accommodation exists in primary schools my Department is prepared to grand-aid the conversion and furnishing of such accommodation for use as computer rooms. Grant-aid is at the level appropriate for capital works which in general is 85 per cent.

Grant-aid is not in general available for the provision of computer equipment. However, I have secured funding for the installation of telecommunications facilities to all of the island schools. These facilities will include telephones, fax facilities, modems, computers and printers. It is hoped to have the equipment installed to all these schools by the end of November.
