Vol. 448 No. 2

Written Answers. - Advisory Arrangements for Emigrants.

Seamus Kirk

Ceist:

111 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he will establish a special advisory arrangement for Irish workers going to Germany to seek employment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1407/95]

My Department has been made aware that a small minority of Irish people have encountered difficulties while working in Germany. My Department's policy in this area is to offer help to potential emigrants before they leave Ireland and to try to dissuade those, who might be at risk in a new country, from emigrating by offering them positive alternatives.

FÁS provides this service and my Department has issued guidelines to FÁS in this regard. I would strongly urge intending emigrants to ensure that they contact FÁS before they seek employment abroad. FÁS is also responsible in Ireland for the EU EURES Programme, which links the employment services of, and provide information on job vacancies in all the member states of the Union. In addition FÁS has two of their employees based in the German Employment Service.
