Vol. 450 No. 7

Written Answers. - Closure of Military Barracks.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

102 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence the military barracks or military institutions which have been closed over the past five years; the number of members of PDFORRA by rank and civilian staff involved; where they were redeployed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5748/95]

In 1990, the old barracks in Cavan town was closed and the troops stationed there were relocated to the new barracks, Dun Ui Neill. Three civilian employees were relocated to the new barracks. The military post at Cootehill, County Cavan, was closed in the same year and the troops stationed there were relocated to Dun Ui Neill and to Monaghan barracks. Six civilian employees were relocated to Dun Ui Neill and two of these were subsequently transferred to Monaghan barracks. The military post at Fort Dunree, County Donegal, was closed also in 1990 and the troops stationed there were relocated to Rockhill and Lifford military posts. Two civilian employees accepted voluntary redundancy.

In 1992 Fort Duncannon, County Wexford, was handed over to Wexford County Council for tourism purposes. There were no permanent military staff or civilian employees located there at that time.

Portion of Collins Barracks, Dublin, was closed in 1994 and handed over to the Office of Public Works for refurbishment and use by the National Museum. The military units involved together with five civilian employees were relocated to Cathal Brugha Barracks, Dublin.

The Department does not maintain records of the precise numbers of enlisted personnel who are members of PDFORRA at any given location. In any event it is not the practice for security reasons to disclose the numbers of military personnel stationed at particular barracks or posts.
