Vol. 451 No. 7

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointments.

Noel Dempsey

Ceist:

93 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Education the reason a school (details supplied) in County Meath was overlooked in the appointment of remedial teachers in view of the fact that the need for such a teacher is well established, as the application has been with her Department for over ten years and as the school is willing to share with other needy schools in the area. [7159/95]

Noel Dempsey

Ceist:

94 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Education the reason the south-west area of County Meath is being neglected in the provision of remedial teachers (details supplied); and the plans, if any, she has to rectify this situation. [7160/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 93 and 94 together.

My Department receives a large number of applications for remedial teachers from primary schools each year. These applications are considered on the basis of priority of need following the collection and analysis of data by my Department's Primary Inspectorate. Available remedial posts are allocated on the basis of the priorities thus identified.

As I recently announced, I intend to allocate an additional 55 remedial teacher posts to the primary school sector in 1995. The needs of schools in County Meath, including the school specifically mentioned by the Deputy, will be considered in the context of this allocation.
