Vol. 453 No. 5

Written Answers. - Court Cases.

John O'Donoghue

Ceist:

87 Mr. O'Donoghue asked the Minister for Justice the number of cases listed for hearing in the High Court and Circuit Court on the date of publication of the Courts and Court Officers Bill; and the number of cases listed for hearing at mid-May 1995. [9641/95]

Court statistics are compiled annually at the end of each legal year i.e. 31 July for the preceding legal year.

The number of civil cases for which notices of trial had been lodged and which were awaiting hearing in the High Court as of 31 July 1994 was 14,428, of which 12,140 were personal injury actions. Records of civil cases for which notices of trial had been lodged and which were awaiting hearing in the Circuit Court as of 31 July 1994 were maintained only in respect of the two largest Circuit Court offices, i.e. Dublin and Cork. There were 7,412 such cases in Dublin and 6,510 such cases in Cork. Arrangements have been put in place to maintain corresponding statistics in respect of all Circuit Court offices in the legal year ending 31 July, 1995.
