Vol. 453 No. 5

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Michael McDowell

Ceist:

90 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will provide statistics for the number of community welfare officers and social welfare appeals for the most recent period for which statistics are available; and the proportion of these appeals which were successful. [9567/95]

The supplementary welfare allowance scheme is administered on behalf of my Department by the eight regional health boards. At present, there are approximately 420 community welfare officers and 41 superintendent community welfare officers involved in the day-to-day administration of the scheme.

With regard to the information requested on appeals, I have assumed that the Deputy is referring to supplementary welfare allowances appeals. The most recent period for which the statistical information requested by the Deputy is available is 1994. In that year, 4,170 appeals were received by the boards and of these 617 were successful.
