Vol. 453 No. 6

Written Answers. - Insurance Cover.

Ned O'Keeffe

Ceist:

118 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the steps, if any, he has taken and plans to take with regard to Irish motorists being able to transfer their insurance cover to rental vehicles while travelling outside Ireland and within the EU and vice versa; and the manner in which this will be regulated by the EU Commission. [9803/95]

Irish motorists hiring rental vehicles while travelling outside Ireland but within the EU normally pay an insurance premium included in the vehicle rental fee. Likewise, foreign motorists hiring rental vehicles in Ireland are covered for insurance arranged by the car rental company. There is no mechanism available at EU level which would allow motorists to rely on their own motor insurance policies for car hire throughout the EU. I am not aware of any plans at EU Commission level to regulate this activity.
