Vol. 459 No. 4

Written Answers. - Equality Issues.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

63 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the issues that have been brought to his attention where the Government has been accused or found to be unfair and where equality has certainly been in question; the initiatives to be undertaken; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18121/95]

The only area for which I have responsibility in which the Government has been found to be unfair or, where equality has been called into question is in relation to the recent finding of the Supreme Court in the McKenna case where it was determined that the spending of public funds to promote a yes vote in the divorce referendum breached the equality rights of citizens under the Constitution. It will be a matter for the Government to decide, in the light of that judgment, how future referenda should be conducted.
