Written Answers. - County Mayo Garda Stations.

Ceist:

140 Mr. Morley asked the Minister for Justice the number of Garda stations in County Mayo that are listed for replacement or refurbishment; their locations; and the current position in each case. [18494/95]

There are currently seven Garda stations in County Mayo on the Garda building programme priority list for replacement or refurbishment. Their locations and the current position in relation to each station is set out hereunder.

Keel: It is expected that tenders for the building of a new station will be invited in the new year.

Tourmakeady: It is proposed to provide a new station on a site that has been purchased. It is not possible, at this stage, to say when work on this project will commence.
Ballindine: It is proposed to build a new station here. Two possible sites are currently under consideration by the Office of Public Works.
Claremorris: A sketch scheme for the new station has been approved. At present the acquisition of additional land to improve the access to the Garda station is being pursued.
Ballinrobe: It is proposed to develop the site of the former station to provide a new area headquarters station. It is not possible, at this stage, to say when work will commence on this project.
Ballina: The Office of Public Works has been asked to carry out a feasibility study on the existing station to establish if Garda requirements can be accommodated there.
Castlebar: Building work on the new station has been completed. While some site work remains to be finished, the Garda have moved into the new premises. It is hoped that the station will be officially opened in the new year.
